CAST, PRESSED, THROWN
CAST
Much of the recent work created at Cone 10 has been slipcast. This is a process that employs plaster molds and allows for repeated forms to be created from an original model. Liquid clay is calibrated with colorants and can be used to create complex or simple forms.
PRESSED
RAM process (in Ohio) developed a unique forming technique and machinery allowing the creation of forms using a two-part mold system. The advantages are the strength of the pressed wares and control for warping.
THROWN
The potter’s wheel requires a certain amount of eloquence and practice to achieve success but is unmatched in the sensual and direct connection with the material. It can be mesmerizing to watch a skillful craftsperson create pottery with this tool.
“I think the artist has to be something like a whale, swimming with his mouth wide open, absorbing everything until he has what he really needs. When he finds that, he can start to make limitations. And then he really begins to grow.”
